Interaction between Unsaturated Soils and Geosynthetics

Research Overview
One of the early topics investigated in our research group was the interaction between unsaturated soils and geosynthetics. One of the topics of most interest was the occurrence of a capillary break effect between compacted soil and a geosynthetic drainage layer during infiltration. We performed several column tests, and used these to evaluate the conditions leading to a capillary break. We have applied these results to understand field monitoring data from instrumented alternative landfill covers (evapotranspirative covers). We are still working on developing new experimental techniques to evaluate the interaction between soils and geosynthetics. For example, we have studied the impact of geosynthetic filtration in fine grained soils that are susceptible to piping using a flexible-wall gradient ratio test.
